THE MAYOR’S ROLE:
The Mayor, who is elected on a city-wide
basis to a three year term, represents the
Commission at all official functions. The
Mayor presides at all Commission meetings,
setting the agenda and maintaining order and
decorum. The Mayor may also organize the
Commission and assign Commissioners to
specific areas of responsibility, subject to
Commission approval. The Mayor does not
have veto power, but will always vote last
and thereby is the potential tie-breaker.
The Mayor may also relinquish the chair to
make a motion or offer a resolution or
ordinance.
THE
CITY COMMISSION
The Commission consists of four
commissioners elected at large to staggered
two year terms. The Commission, which
includes the Mayor, is responsible for
determining the types and levels of services
to be provided as well as enacting laws,
regulations and policies that govern the
city and its activities. The Commission
oversees the general operation of the City
by approving the annual budget and
subsequent amendments, all interlocal,
development, franchise and miscellaneous
agreements as well as all land use and
zoning changes. In addition to appointing
the City Attorney and the City Clerk, the
Commission also appoints members to various
citizen boards and committees.
